Asking for a raise could be one of the easiest ways to make more money.  In the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t require that much effort, and it can be used as a learning experience and a way to improve overall job functionality and performance.

You shouldn’t be afraid to ask for a raise- you are your best advocate!  If you don’t get a raise when you ask the first time, don’t stress. You showed initiative by asking, and you started a dialogue, which lets your manager know what you’re thinking. Don’t be afraid to ask your boss questions during this time- ask how you are doing, talk about long and short term goals, and ask how you can improve and grow in your current position.

You should also go into this conversation prepared.  Have a plan in place. Be ready to discuss what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.  Be prepared to follow through! That way, the next time you sit down with your boss to discuss your overall performance, you have more leverage than you did before and you can outline what you’ve accomplished since your last discussion.  Maybe you didn’t get a raise the first time around, but by opening up a dialogue you are moving in the right direction and you are networking with your manager.
