So you think that going to school to be an engineer would be a perfect way to make more money.  I love engineers and work with them all day, but it takes a special type of person to make it all work out in the end.

Traditional route reads, “go to college after highschool.”  This requires very bright and mindful young people filled with the passion and determination while everyone else is on vacation.  I’ve been there and let me tell you there is a reason I’m writing this blog rather than sending rockets into space! Don’t be afraid to take a minute to try and figure out what you are passionate about; passion will drive you farther and faster than someone telling you that you have to be an engineer.

You need to find an internship.  You should also do your best to pay for school without going into debt.  Going into debt adds a whole new stress and pressure that make everything more difficult.

Think about industries that are going to thrive in the next few years, such as the biomedical device industry.  If you are a non traditional student and you are going back later in life, be sure that the skills you are studying are in demand.  All the skills you thought would be awesome aren’t going to amount to anything if nobody needs them.
